Migration Challenge

Elementary

Description

In Migration Challenge, students role-play migrating birds during three outdoor games. Students will model a flock of migrating birds, identify and communicate the advantages and disadvantages of travelling in groups and cities, and discuss solutions for reducing migration hazards.

First, students will play the Air Bird Game as a warm-up activity where they fly a bird (a balloon) to a new home without letting it drop.

In the main activity, Flocking Together, students model a flock of migrating birds and learn how and why geese fly in a V formation. They learn the advantages and disadvantages of travelling in a large group

Lastly, during the Migration Game, students role-play a flock of geese flying through a city or town and collecting food and water at each stopover point. They learn how some stopover sites provide limited resources and other dangerous hazards to birds.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

This outdoor activity can be used to support grades K-4 themes and outcomes related to habitat, populations and human impact on the environment. It provides an opportunity to take the learning outside. The resource offers an Explore Some More section that suggests various activities and migratory maps to enhance the learning.
