In 2015, all UN member states adopted Transforming our world: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a plan of action to create a better world for people and the planet, now and into the future. At the heart of this 2030 Agenda are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals have the power to fight inequality, strengthen communities, increase wellbeing, and stop climate change. They also provide a framework for understanding and exploring sustainable development.
There is growing international recognition of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as a key component of quality education and an essential tool for a sustainable future. The SDGs provide a clear overview of sustainable development principles and offer limitless opportunities for learning and action. ESD is also found within the goals, in Target 4.7 under SDG 4: Quality Education:
4.7 Education for sustainable development and global citizenship
By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development
By aligning our Resources for Rethinking database with the UN SDGs, LSF provides teachers with a wide range of resources to not only achieve Target 4.7, but to explore and act on all 17 Goals. R4R equips teachers with the necessary tools to integrate ESD into their classrooms, empowering their students to live responsibly and take actions for our sustainable future.
